MEMORABLE MOMENTS- Sarah Borden Duffy

Chris, Gina and Justin 2014What a wonderful occasion to share a few “Memorable Moments”. Of course time and space would fail me if I tried to write them all, so I decided to narrow it down to a one-on-one time that I spent with each of my three children.

In 1983, I married James Duffy Jr. and together we produced three lovely children. Gina, my oldest and only daughter, followed by two sons, Christopher and Justin. Each of them so special, so unique and I feel blessed to have given birth to them. My experience being their mom has been glutted with one reward after another, and the challenges, very few.

Gina who is now 29 years old is a smart cookie. Being the only girl, she at times felt slighted, always having to trek along to her brothers baseball games and tournaments. Her dad’s attention was laser focused on grooming his ‘Boys’ to be future Pro Baseball Players. Keenly aware of her need for personal attention, at times she and I would do things together. I really enjoyed that time when I was house-sitting my neighbors home and Gina and I decided to Crash there for our movie night. We brought a blanket and snacks and we stayed up all night snuggled up drinking hot chocolate, and watching Jane Aire Movies.

A Memorable Moment with my first son Chris was when he was about 12 years old and we went to our local Mall in Orlando Florida. As we were entering the mall I asked him to please open the door for me and he did a half job at it, and let the door go a bit too soon. I decided it was time to teach him how to treat a Lady, so I went back outside and asked him to open the door again. Again he let the door go before I could get completely inside, and again he had to keep repeatedly opening the door for me until he got it right. He became very angry and of course he was embarrassed by all the spectators, but I was determined to teach him to be a gentleman. I do believe my persistence paid off because now he is 26 years old and I heard from several sources that he is a TRUE Gent:)

Finally, a Memorable Moment of my youngest son Justin whom I’ve been accused of “Pampering”. I am no longer in denial of such accusations, although ambivalent about having done so. What Can I Say? I have NO EXCUSE for such behavior except to say “this was the last baby”, and I guarded him like a ‘Hawk’. Tell me I wasn’t thinking about his safety when he had to go in the swimming pool at 6 years old wearing Arm Wings, a Waist Ring, and a Life Jacket, not allowed to go beyond the shallow end of the pool at that! To this day we have video footage of him in all that Safety Gear Floating on Top of the water all by himself with Pattie Labelle’s Music playing in the background and Guess what song she was singing? You Guessed it right! “On My Own”… As told by Sarah Borden Duffy, daughter of Joshua E. Borden Jr. and the late Evelyn Nelson Borden Smallwood. Granddaughter of Dearly Beloved Joshua E. Borden Sr. and Channie Bessie Borden, Great Granddaughter of John Louis Borden and Cottie Elvira Eason Borden, Great Granddaughter 2X of Joshua Borden and Judah Austin Borden, and Great Granddaughter 3X of Ben Holden.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS – Elizabeth Borden Anderson

Memorable Moments

I have so many cherished memories about my growing up years, later great memories with my own immediate family. Right now I am banking great memories with my daughter LiRon’s family (husband Glen, son Asa and daughter Bradleigh).  They are truly the best – “adding years to my life and life to my years!!! I also have memorable moments with my extended Borden family, which I will now share.

I loved visiting my Philadelphia family. Aunt Celeste and Uncle Sutton were my “fun” relatives. I remember them taking me to Atlantic City where a relative of theirs marched in a seemingly endless parade with the Eastern Star ladies and the Elks. They were all dressed in white and strutting their stuff in tune with a huge marching band. I was transfixed at the sight of all those black men and women marching proudly while the audience cheered them. It was such a beautiful sight to behold.

On one of my Philly visits I met a girl from the neighborhood who taught me how to do a dance I had never seen before called the “slop” (and I can still do it with some modification). That’s when I learned that the slickest dances came to Philly first before migrating to the Big Apple. I also got to learn and play crochet with cousin Billy and his friends Buddy and Stormy.

My first (and only) roller coaster ride was with my Uncle William Sutton Borden. The family had gone to an amusement park outside of Philly (Wildwood?) during my 2-week’s summer stay when I was about 11/12. This was the summer when cousin Susan was in the hospital recuperating from a serious burn injury. I didn’t want my favorite uncle to know I was afraid so I didn’t scream. We did the ride twice (phew)!

I fondly remember Aunt Celeste patiently teaching me how to make raisin sandwich cookies. Aunt Celeste became my favorite relative because she would buy the good one and two cents candies and eat them with us, all the while my parents were cautioning me against eating candy to preserve my teeth. Were we partners in crime? Should I blame Aunt Celeste for my chronic dental issues?? (Of course not). I am happy to report that as I matured, Aunt Celeste remained my favorite aunt for other reasons, mainly for her generosity, her non-judgmental attitude, her love for fashion, her love for all family and her friendly wit. Yes – I told her all of that. She certainly manifested all of the ingredients that made her a great “Queen Mother” in the ancient African tradition. I was overjoyed when I learned that the “Bells”  (LiRon, et al) had purchased a home just one mile away from Aunt Celeste!

And of course Susan and I are great pals. We are supporting each other with our intentions to stay healthy, to stay balanced and to enjoy all of life’s continuing Blessings. Susan prays harder than I do so I feel especially Blessed. Amen!

Borden/Cobb Family Reunion Returns to Ancestral Home Town August 1 to 3

PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Borden/Cobb Family Reunion August 1, 2014 to August 3, 2014 Returns to Ancestral Homeplace – Kinston, North Carolina
Kinston, North Carolina, June 20, 2014 – BORDEN/COBB Family Reunion for descendants of Ben Holden, his son Joshua Borden and his sister (name unknown) mother of Annie Vashti Delamar who married Thomas Battle.
The Borden and Cobb Families are planning a Family Reunion in Kinston, North Carolina – August 1, 2014 to August 3, 2014 headquartered at the Hampton Inn on Route 70. The Borden and Cobb Families share a common ancestor in Ben Holden (1795). These families enjoy an ancestry dating back to 1795 in Kinston and New Bern.
Joshua Borden(1825 – 1900), son of Ben Holden was one of the founders of St. Augustus African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in 1865. Descendants of Joshua played important roles in the development of that Christian institution. Joshua was also a leading advocate for education and the formal schooling of Black children. He saw to it that all of his children were educated and all of them could read and write. Even under the scourge of slavery Joshua learned to read and write and used the bible not only to learn and teach the word of the Lord but to learn and teach the basics of reading and writing to his children and others. The offspring of Joshua and Judah Austin Borden (his wife) were outstanding citizens of Kinston. They included Edward, Joshua, Peter, Susan, Sarah Frances and John Louis. In addition to being staunch supporters and officers of the church, Joshua, Judah and their children were ministers, carpenters and merchants in Kinston and Goldsboro. Some of their descendants also settled in Little Washington. Subsequent generations have settled in New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, Florida, California and many other localities. Over time many family surnames have been adopted including: Borden, Moore, Patrick, Wooten, Strong, Battle, Cobb, Hubbard, Collier, Kendall, Green, White, Christian, Anderson, Frazier, Jones, Smith, Evans, Bell, Marshall, Graham, Duffy and many others.
Ben Holden also had a daughter (the sister of Joshua) although her name has been obscured in the vagaries of time, her daughter’s name was Annie Vashti Delamar (Battle) who married Thomas Battle. Annie lived in New Bern with her husband, Thomas Battle, one of the early pastors at the historic St. Peters African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, the first AME Zion church in the south, founded by Bishop James Walker Hood in 1864. One of Annie’s Children, Sophie Battle (who attended the first family reunion in 1982) married Moses P. Cobb (the first African American police officer in NY) and thus the Cobb Family name.
Family and friends are welcomed to join us in a weekend of celebration and activities. All are invited to the worship service at St Augustus, the ancestral family church, on Sunday, August 3, 2014 at 11 am. A ticketed brunch will follow the service.

Family Spotlight On: Christopher Duffy

Chris DuffyBorden Living History: CHRISTOPHER DUFFY – OUR BORDEN FAMILY BASEBALL ALL STAR

Previously Posted on May 13, 2013 by suebeewrites on Blog: “suebeewrites Explores Her Borden Family Roots”

Every once in a while I am blessed with a present that is totally unexpected, incredibly special, more precious than silver or gold and “All the Way Live”. And so it was for ten short days in April 2013 I got to spend some “God Special” time with my cousin Christopher Duffy, baseball player and human dynamo extraordinaire. Chris is the son of Sarah Borden Duffy (James Duffy), grandson of Joshua E. Borden, Jr. (Evelyn), and Great Grandchild of Joshua Edward Borden, Sr. (Channie Bessie Cox). Early one morning, as I was buried in my “ancestry” research, I received a call from cousin Sarah. It wasn’t a total surprise since I “conjured” her up. I’d been thinking about Sarah for several weeks and in fact had been on the verge of calling her as well as looking up her son Chris’ team status to see where he was playing baseball this season….with the hope that he would be playing nearby so I could actually get to see him in action. Sarah informed me that Chris had been released from his Phillies Minor League Team and picked up by an Independent League Team in New Jersey. He needed a place to lay his head until his next team started practice (just a couple of weeks) …. so enter cousin Susan from stage right. A more delightful visit I have never had. Cousin Chris is one of the most positive, energetic, helpful and focused young men that I have ever met. Between his daily workouts and gym visits we had great conversations about our family history. In keeping with general genealogical protocol regarding capturing living history, Chris recorded his story, which is inspirational, however, we know for sure the best is yet to come. Chris spoke reverently of his dad, James, who started Chris and his younger brother Justin, in baseball at a very young age. They progressed from Little League and Travel Baseball to their High school varsity teams where they excelled at every level and travelled the world. Upon Chris’ graduation from high school he was drafted by the White Sox Baseball Team, an offer which he turned down. He and his family decided rather than go pro at that time he would attend the University of Central Florida on a full scholarship. Chris had an “All Star” College career graduating in 2010 and breaking many of his college’s records and was a Golden Spikes nominee (similar to being nominated for the Heisman in football). He was drafted by the Phillies out of College and has had a standout career. Some baseball aficionados were surprised and disappointed that the Phillies didn’t promote him since his play and statistics were outstanding. Chris is now playing with the New Jersey Jackals in Little Falls, NJ. He anticipates eventually being picked up by a Pro Team. In his “free time” Chris works with a motivational speaking program, “ABOVE .500″, for middle school and high school youth. His non profit organization has pep rallies called “Dream Rallies” to encourage youngsters to pursue their dreams. Other members of the family including Belladelphia (LiRon, Glenn, Asa and Bradleigh Bell), John Borden (Sr.), Carter Borden, and Brittany Borden met and broke bread with Chris. There are many other members of the family that are poised to go out to the ball park and cheer Chris on. Our guy, Christopher Duffy, is on his way and the Borden family is very proud of our very own ALL Star!
Family Love.

*Chris is currently playing his 2014 season with an Independent League in South Dakota.

While I have no conscious memory of the event, it surely felt great being back in the home where I was born at 506 East Blount Street in Kinston North Carolina.

My parents Joshua E. Borden Sr. and C. Bessie Cox Borden transported my older brother Joshua Jr. and me to Norfolk, Va. soon after my Mom graduated from Elizabeth City State Teachers College. I believe I was about 4 years old when we moved to New York City. I love living in New York! Yet, I visit Philadelphia quite often to spend time with grandson Asa Amandla, granddaughter Bradleigh Dejeneba, daughter LiRon Anderson-Bell, son-in-law Glenn Bell and my Grand-Dog Jaxon Bell and of course, cousin Susan Borden. I have lots of blood cousins as well as play cousins in Philly so in a way Philly is my second home – but I am not leaving New York (I don’t think).

While I am still employed as a professor at the City University of New York (part-time), I mostly enjoy my work as a cultural artist. My main hobby is preparing delicious food – I love to eat and I was fed very well while in Kinston during my last two visits. Thank you Charles and Martha! Thank you Alice and William Henry! I am looking forward to reuniting with my kinsfolk at the reunion this August.

Reunion Committee Meeting in Kinston, NC on 4-26-14

The Kinston Borden Family Reunion Steering Committee met on April 26, 2014 and we are excited to report that the Committee has laid the foundation for a Great Reunion. Time was taken at the beginning of the meeting to introduce (or reintroduce) ourselves and branches of our family that we represented (Parents, Grandparents and Great Grandparents).

Present at the meeting were: Martha and Charles Cobb, Elizabeth Borden Anderson, Alice Moore, Debra Moore-Marshall and Susan Borden Evans.

Update of activities:
* Reunion Packet has been distributed (on line)
* Souvenir Journal Forms have been distributed (on line)
* We are getting the Word Out! (Everyone is responsible for spreading word to OWN FAMILY)
* Committees have been formed (Volunteers are still needed)
* Host Hotel has been selected (Hampton Inn)- Make Your Reservations Early

Martha Cobb described her activities to date as the Dinner Chairperson and the various locations and caterers available. It was decided that our 1st choice for the Dinner and Sunday Brunch was the St. Augustus AME Zion Church, the Family Church that our Great Grandparents founded in 1865. The Steering Committee decided that the final decision would be left to the discretion of the Committee. We would discuss with Rev Pridgeon whether the church would permit us to dance at the dinner if given at the Church.

Activities were discussed and cousin Deborah agreed to Chair the Activities Committee (especially the younger children). There are numerous activities in and around the Kinston area. We are planning a bus tour of interesting places and family related sites. Charles volunteered to organize the bus tour. We will also lay flowers at our family cemetery. There is a trendy new jazz club and a 4 star restaurant (for the foodies). In addition Kinston has a water park, historical park, and a new micro brewery that does tastings.

Everyone was encouraged to pass the word to with their family members encourage them to come and pay for their registrations early.

The Committee agreed that we need to have some incentives to encourage participation especially among our younger family members and came up with 2 ideas:
* Talent Show (at dinner) with cash prizes (so make sure you sign up for talent show)
* 1 Free Reunion Registration for getting 3 full page ads for Souvenir Journal

Words for the Good of the Group were exchanged and the meeting adjourned.

Martha and Charles provided a scrumptious repast for the committee.

The date is set for the Borden-Cobb 2014 Family Reunion!
